چکیده

Two common indicators of Atlantic climate variability, viz., the North Atlantic oscillation (NAO) and the crossintertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) sea surface temperature (SST) gradient, are examined for their frequency characteristics and midlatitude-tropical links. SST anomalies north and south of the ITCZ are found to be uncorrelated on all time scales, while the sea level pressure (SLP) fluctuations associated with the NAO display a coherent seesaw between Iceland and the Azores. This out-of-phase relationship spans a broad range of time scales, but is particularly strong in the 5 10 year period band. Strong, broadband coherence between the NAO and the tropical Atlantic crossITCZ SST difference is found in the 8-20 year period band, suggesting a significant midlatitude-tropical interaction. Moreover, tropical Atlantic SSTs on both sides of the ITCZ, separately, exhibit significant coherence with the NAO index and SLP variability over Iceland and the Azores. Based on these findings we hypothesize that the tropical Atlantic (TA) ocean-atmosphere interaction is affecting North Atlantic climate variability.

Atlantic Climate Variability Experiment Prospectus

Energetic, large-scale variability is observed in the atmosphere and ocean of the Atlantic Sector on interannual and decadal time scales. It is manifested as coherent fluctuations in temperature , rainfall, surface pressure and temperature reaching eastward to central Europe and northern Asia, southward to subtropical West Africa and westward to North and South America with a myriad of well doc...

North Atlantic climate variability in coupled models and data

We show that the observed zonally averaged jet in the Northern Hemisphere atmosphere exhibits two spatial patterns with broadband variability in the decadal and inter-decadal range; these patterns are consistent with an important role of local, mid-latitude ocean–atmosphere coupling. A key aspect of this behaviour is the fundamentally nonlinear bi-stability of the atmospheric jet’s latitudinal ...

Tropical Pacific 1976–77 Climate Shift in a Linear, Wind-Driven Model*

A number of studies have attempted to explain the cause of decadal variability in the tropical Pacific and explore its possible link to decadal variability in the midlatitude Pacific. To investigate some of the current theories of Pacific decadal variability, a linear, wind-driven model, designed to simulate only baroclinic wave dynamics, was forced with wind stress anomalies in the Pacific Oce...

A central tropical Pacific coral demonstrates Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic decadal climate connections

While instrumental and proxy-based climate records describe significant decadal-scale climate variability throughout the tropical Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic Oceans, the processes responsible for these variations and their interactions are not readily apparent from the observations. A new 112-yr coral-based sea surface temperature (SST) reconstruction from Palmyra Island in the central tropic...

Model Assessment of Decadal Variability and Trends in the Tropical Pacific Ocean

In this report, global coupled ocean–atmosphere models are used to explore possible mechanisms for observed decadal variability and trends in Pacific Ocean SSTs over the past century. The leading mode of internally generated decadal (.7 yr) variability in the model resembles the observed decadal variability in terms of pattern and amplitude. In the model, the pattern and time evolution of tropi...
